Universal Credit debate – Pt.1Watch below ⬇️⬇️ for a clip of my speech during today’s opposition day debate on Universal Credit. The new system is yet to be fully rolled out, but I’ve already had constituents who’ve been forced into extreme financial hardship as a direct result of the failure of this Government’s flagship policy. The move over to Universal Credit has proved to be an administrative and financial nightmare for the very people it claims to be there to support. People have been left for months with no money for food, clothes, electricity. All because of this Government’s insistence on pushing on with a new benefits system that they know doesn’t yet work properly, and that have been warned might never meet its planned targets. It’s a disgrace.

Universal Credit Debate Pt.2

Universal Credit Debate Pt.2Many people in Liverpool who’ve been hit hard by the disastrous rollout of Universal Credit have been forced to rely on food charities such as Can Cook and support from the Liverpool Mayor’s Mayoral Hardship Fund and Citizen Support Scheme just to make ends meet whilst they wait endlessly for the benefit payments they’re entitled to. Without this support, which exists at the moment despite deep cuts to our local government budgets, many people would have nowhere else to turn. It simply isn’t good enough that this Government continues to pursue a policy they know isn’t working, that they know won’t meet its objectives, and that they’ve openly admitted will cause many families to lose out. It’s time Universal Credit is scrapped.

Without the council’s support, which exists at the moment despite deep cuts to our local government budgets, many people would have nowhere to turn.
