On Wednesday in The House I spoke in the King’s Speech adjournment debate about my Public Advocate Bill, which I have been fighting for since 2016 and which the Conservatives Government have objected to at every opportunity. The Government have included their own version of an Independent Advocate in the Victims and Prisoners Bill but this doesn’t go far enough in the powers it would give victims and families and simply isn’t fit for purpose. It is a missed opportunity to give families real agency following a disaster.

A standalone Public Advocate Bill would be a fitting legacy for the Hillsborough families and would help prevent the victims and families of future public disasters having to endure what the Hillsborough families have had to for 34 years. I was not drawn out in the ballot for a Private Members Bill Friday slot to introduce the Bill but will continue to bring the Public Advocate Bill to The House at every opportunity until it is accepted.
