I was pleased this week to hear that Liverpool Cricket Club’s pavilion has been granted Grade II listed status following advice from Historic England. It is a venue that I know well and many will remember it not just as a fixture of local sport but as somewhere we have held Labour fundraisers over the years.

The Pavilion was built in 1880 by renowned architect Thomas Harnett Harrison and has been listed as a recognition of its special architectural features and it important place in the history of North West cricket and sports. It is the oldest surviving cricket pavilion in the country located at a first-class ground and over the years has hosted numerous international matches through its history, with Don Bradman playing on the ground. It even hosted an early football international between England and Ireland in 1883.

Protecting local landmarks like the pavilion is important for the community and I am pleased that this will safeguard the structure for many years to come.
