It was great this week to spend some time back at the DHL Express Depot in Speke, which I opened in the year 2000. It is as vital local employer which has won awards as a Great Place To Work, and I was pleased to meet staff who are still working at the business from opening day.

DHL, which has processed and shipped over 30 million items at their Speke depot since 2000, is embracing new, greener technologies alongside their existing fleet of vehicles. I was pleased to be shown one of their newer electric vehicles, which are charged up on site to carry parcels to some of the 42 other DHL service centres around the UK. Often these are processed at airports to be shipped around the world to over 200 countries.

DHL are aiming to be an emissions-free logistics carrier by the year 2050 and their Speke site has a part to play in that. As I saw this week their electric vehicles are a huge step forward from the internal combustion engine but I was also happy to hear they are looking at other emerging green technologies, too, as part of their GoGreen plan. Combating the threat of climate change is vitally important for all our futures.
