On Friday, Christopher Chope’s Mobile Homes (Pitch Fees) Bill passed through all its Commons stages in just over three minutes. It had support across the House and nobody shouted “Object”. If anyone had, it would have been halted. I have been introducing my Public Advocate Bill since 2016, multiple times in the Commons. Having waved Christopher Chope’s Bill through, the Govt again objected to mine. I raised a point of order and got a sympathetic response.

The Public Advocate (No. 2) Bill, which has also been introduced into the House of Lords by Lord Michael Wills, has cross-party support, including from senior politicians on both sides. On this occasion we saw how swiftly a bill can be sent on its way yet the Government then chose to object to my Bill again.

I will bring the Bill back on 9 December and will continue to introduce the Bill to the House until it is taken forward. As Keir Starmer promised in his Conference Leader’s Speech the next Labour Government will pass the Bill alongside the Hillsborough Law when they are elected. That cannot happen soon enough.

You can see the point of order – and the Deputy Speaker’s response – below.
