I share the concerns of Constituents who’ve written to me about the Government’s decision for Chester Zoo and Knowsley Safari Park to remain closed indefinitely. The Government haven’t made clear what they’ll do to secure the future of these attractions, or explained their reasoning behind exempting zoos from the easing of the lockdown measures. It seems completely illogical that in a few weeks the Government will allow non-essential indoor retail to open, but not zoos!

That’s why I’ve signed Early Day Motion 571 which highlights the contribution Chester Zoo makes to the local economy, education and conservation, and asks the Government to allow the re-opening of zoos, subject to safe social distancing measures being implemented. You can read the EDM here.

I’ve also signed Early Day Motion 578, tabled by Knowsley MP George Howarth, calling for the safe re-opening of safari parks. This highlights how the drive-through element of safari parks makes it easier for visitors to maintain social distancing there than in other shops and attractions the Government are allowing to re-open!
