Thank you to the many, many Constituents who’ve taken the time to write to me to express their outrage at the appalling behaviour of Dominic Cummings. I think that the Prime Minister should dismiss Mr Cummings immediately, given the multiple breaches of the lockdown he’s committed and the contempt with which he has treated the lockdown rules. There can’t be one rule for the PM and his friends and another for the rest of us.
People across our communities in Garston and Halewood have sacrificed so much to follow the lockdown rules to stop the spread of Coronavirus and some have done so at tremendous personal cost. Mr Cummings’ disregard for the rules and embarrassing, unconvincing attempts to defend his actions are insulting to everyone who did the right thing and took seriously the instruction to stay at home.
Now there’s a real danger that lockdown will disintegrate too early, as people feel they cannot trust the Government’s advice if they are hypocrites and do not themselves follow that advice. There’s a real danger that, if lockdown ends too early, we’ll see a resurgence of COVID-19 and will lose many more lives. By defending Mr Cummings, this is what the Government risks. He needs to go and go now.
