The cynical announcement by PM Johnson that he is to recruit more police is not based on community need or patters of crime but simply advantages Tory shire County forces.

Merseyside police has been told it can recruit 200 more officers but has lost 1,120 officers since 2010, so this is a drop in the ocean.

Leafy Tory Surrey, has been told to recruit 78 new officers – but they’ve only lost 8 in total since 2010 due to austerity cuts.

This will leave them with more police than they actually need but Merseyside with significantly fewer.

Whilst every police force area has issues of crime that it must tackle, the guns, knives and gang issues faced by the Merseyside force are much more serious than the crime faced in Surrey. The Government are yet again skewing public spending to their own areas – which need it significantly less than Labour areas like ours.
