After two years Theresa May has at long last announced her resignation. She has left behind a self-obsessed, disintegrating Tory Party and a country more divided than ever.

Her leadership has been defined by her authoritarian style, rank incompetence and small-minded instincts. She has achieved none of what she set out in her first speech to the public. Brexit and the Commons are in total chaos and her aim to deal with the “burning injustices” that exist in our country was never acted upon, let alone achieved. It is utterly staggering that she has stayed for so long despite her many flaws and the desire of MPs from all sides of the Commons to see her resign.

The Tory psychodrama surrounding Brexit has now claimed its second Prime Minister and shows no signs of going away. The Brexit extremists in her party will not rest until they see the UK leave the EU with no deal, causing untold damage to our country and the lives of my constituents. Even worse, our next Prime Minister will now be chosen by 120,000 Tory Party members who are understood to have been infiltrated by many former UKIP members and hard-line Brexiteers.

The only way forward for the UK is a General Election and failing that a Peoples Vote to give the people a choice over Brexit, who governs them and the future of the UK.
