On Tuesday I spoke in a debate on education funding after a petition highlighting the lack of money the Government is providing to our schools gained over 106,852 signatures – far over the threshold needed for the issue to be raised in parliament. St Christopher’s Primary School in Speke in my constituency is just one example of a schools that has seen huge cuts to its funding under the Tories.

Education Funding Debate – 6th March 2019

Yesterday I spoke in a debate on education funding ⬇️⬇️ after a petition highlighting the lack of money the Government is providing to our schools gained over 106,852 signatures – far over the threshold needed for the issue to be raised in parliament. St Christopher’s Primary School in Speke in my constituency is one that has seen huge cuts to its funding under the Tories.St Christopher's is not the only school affected. Under this Government’s National Funding Formula per pupil funding has fallen to record levels since 2010. The levels of funding for some schools compared to others is stark – a 50-70% difference between the best and worst funded schools across the country. Rising costs only add to this. Salaries, pension contributions and increasing complexity in the needs of pupils and their families increases the financial strain. This isn’t a fair way to fund our schools. Children in this country deserve the best quality education we can offer, but unless the Government changes the way it funds our schools the situation won’t improve.

St Christopher’s is not the only school affected. Under this Government’s National Funding Formula per pupil funding has fallen to a record low and since 2010 Lib Dem Tory Governments have removed most of the school funding linked to deprivation and local need. These changes are creating huge challenges for headteachers across Liverpool.

Rising costs are only adding the problem. Salaries, pension contributions and increasing complexity in the needs of pupils and their families increases the financial strain.

This isn’t a fair way to fund our schools. Children in Liverpool deserve the best quality education we can offer, unless the Government changes the way it funds our schools the situation won’t improve.
