I recently met with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) along with other MPs with automotive jobs in their constituencies to talk about the challenges they face in the current UK climate.

I congratulate the 6000 staff at JLR Halewood for securing the new version of Evoque, something that should secure the immediate future of the plant. However, we see at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port – where another 241 job losses have been announced meaning that almost half the workforce have gone in the last two years – the challenges being faced by the auto manufacturing industry in the North West.

Any car plant is only as successful as the model it is building and there are other uncertainties like Brexit and the reducing popularity of diesel vehicles that also pose challenges.

As a Constituency where 22% of employees work in manufacturing, the way we deal with Brexit and economic uncertainty going forward is particularly important to the future prosperity of families in Garston and Halewood.
