On Friday, I had another chance to try and secure a second reading of my Tyred bill which would ban the use of tyres over 10 years old on buses and coaches. This was the 7th attempt at getting a second reading, as the Tories have inexplicably blocked progression of this common-sense bill each time so far.

Disappointingly, but not unexpectedly, the Government have once again objected to the second reading of the Tyred bill. The day before, I received a letter from the Transport Minister committing to updating and extending existing guidelines. However whilst I welcome this slight move forward, it simply isn’t enough.

Govt. Objects to Tyred Bill Second Reading – Again

Disappointingly, but not unexpectedly, the Government have once again objected to the second reading of the Tyred bill. Yesterday, I received a letter from the Transport Minister committing to updating and extending existing guidelines.⬇️⬇️Whilst I welcome this slight move forward, it simply isn’t enough. The department have collected information at vehicle inspections showing that in this year alone 112 tyres that did not meet the voluntary guidance were being used on PSVs. Given the catastrophic consequences if one of these tyres suddenly failed, it would be better and clearer for all concerned for the government simply to outlaw them. This is what Tyred campaign want and what my bill would achieve. I’ll be back on the 25th January for another go. By then, hopefully the Government will have seen sense.
