On Friday the Tories rejected my Private Members Bill calling for a ten year age limit on all tyres for the 6th time. We will have another chance in November but it is likely to be rejected again. This is an extremely disappointing situation. The Tories must act to ban old tyres from our roads at the earliest opportunity, it is a simple change to make that could save lives.

That being said, the Tyred campaign has made huge progress this year. Frances Molloy and the Tyred campaign have worked with me to secure regular meetings with the transport department and research is underway to find out what risks old tyres pose and what age limit should be set on them.

I am hopeful that this research will lead to legislation against old, dangerous tyres and we will continue to meet the department until this becomes a reality. Please show your support for the Tyred Campaign, follow them on Twitter – twitter.com/tyreduk – like and share their posts and use the hashtag #OldTyresKill.
