On Tuesday I received this disappointing letter from the Department for Work and Pensions. I previously wrote to them asking for a proper answer to my question on the average number of day’s universal credit claimants in my constituency have been sanctioned for in the last twelve months. Sanctions can leave claimants with no income at all and force them into debt.

This is a simple question, one that you would expect the Government to be able to provide an answer to.

However it took over a month for the response from the Minister to arrive, even after I chased for a response via another written question to the department. This letter offers no clarification, just a lot of waffle about how they still don’t have the answer. The Minister says he will update me when he has more information, but I won’t hold my breath.
