On Sunday I was proud to join over 5000 people who took to the streets in Liverpool to call for a peoples vote on the final Brexit deal. The march closed down roads in the city centre and at times stretched as far as the eye could see.  It was great to see so many people supporting calls for a people’s vote on the final Brexit deal negotiated by the PM so the nation can be sure of what they are voting for unlike the 2016 referendum when they were told a pack of lies by the Leave campaign.

Marching for #peoplesvote

Over 5000 people took to the streets of Liverpool on Sunday to march in support of a #peoplesvote on the final Brexit deal. Labour's Brexit position keeps this option open if the Tories fail to negotiate a good deal for Britain. We will be ready if and when that happens.

Labour members overwhelmingly support a peoples vote and so did delegates at Conference. When Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union Keir Starmer told members that Brexit could still be stopped and a People’s Vote will be kept on the table he received a huge standing ovation. I am sure this show of support and the march both played a part in firming up Labour’s position on the people’s vote at conference.

Conference voted to keep the option of a peoples vote open if the Tories fail to negotiate a good deal for Britain. It has also been suggested that “Remain” could be an option if a vote was held, something I would certainly support. We cannot allow the extreme Brexiter Tories to determine the fate of the country for years, or even decades to come. The people must be given another say once all the facts about the deal are known. Brexit is a right wing Tory project and we must give people a chance to have a final say.

I fully expect the Tories to fail in their negotiations with the EU. Their extremists want the negotiations to fail and want us to crash out so that they can do away with workers rights, consumers rights, environmental and regulatory standards and turn Britain into an offshore low wage, no rights economy. We cannot allow this to happen.
