In answer to my Parliamentary Question about the economic impacts on our region of the four tolled crossings of the Mersey, the Government has stated that they will NOT even evaluate the economic impact of the Mersey Gateway Bridge for FIVE years.

This is in spite of questions being asked locally about whether falling house prices and increasing unemployment has anything to do with the deterrent effect of the £900 a year cost of a river crossing that used to be free. (Echo 22 August) They don’t plan on evaluating the economic impact of introducing tolls on the Silver Jubilee Bridge at all.

This is simply not good enough from the Tory Government. They have forced Halton Council to toll the bridges or they would not have allowed the new bridge to be built. Now they are refusing to research the impact of their punitive policies on the region. This is yet more evidence of Government indifference to our region. Click here to read the Parliamentary question and answer in full.
