Debate on Banning the UK Fur Trade

Yesterday I spoke during a Westminster Hall debate on banning the trade of animal fur in our country for a #FurFreeBritain ⬇️In 1999 I introduced a Bill to ban fur farming in this country, a Bill that was adopted a year later by the Labour Government to become the Fur Farming (Prohibition) Act 2000. This represented a major step forward at that time, but it hasn’t stopped the trade of real fur in the UK completely. Animals are still farmed for their fur abroad, in appalling conditions with little to no concern for their welfare. A significant amount of this fur then makes its way into our UK market, with £55.6m of animal fur imported into the UK in 2016 alone. Shockingly, much of this is sold on under the guise of “fake” fur, because the terrible conditions the animals are bred in makes it cheaper to produce real fur. This has to stop. It’s time the Government took action, set an example to the rest of the world by banning the trade of fur and put an end to the unnecessary suffering of these wild animals.

Yesterday I spoke during a Westminster Hall debate on banning the trade of animal fur in our country for a #FurFreeBritain.

In 1999 I introduced a Bill to ban fur farming in this country, a Bill that was adopted a year later by the Labour Government to become the Fur Farming (Prohibition) Act 2000.
