The Tories treatment of the Windrush Generation is a national scandal, its time for the Home Secretary to resign. This Government’s policy of creating a “hostile environment” for migrants into the UK has led to thousands of people who have lived and worked in Britain all their lives being denied access to public services, losing their employment and even being detained.Watch the video below for more.

This is a disgraceful state of affairs. On Monday, I asked the Home Secretary whether she planned to continue this policy of hostility. Her response was to deny that this had ever been the case.

Ever since the scandal came to light the Home Secretary’s denials of any wrongdoing have unravelled bit by bit each day.

On Wednesday, Rudd was brought before the Home Affairs Select Committee to explain how the appalling treatment of the Windrush Generation was allowed to happen. When asked about whether the Home Office had targets in place for removing people who they deem to be living in the UK illegally, she denied all knowledge of their existence.

Come Thursday when she was called to the Chamber to respond to an Urgent Question on the issue, she made the staggering admission that “the Home Office has been using local targets for internal performance management” but claiming that she had only just been made aware.

By Friday it became clear that it would be near impossible for her not to be aware, when a memo was leaked clearly showing that targets for removal are not only common knowledge but an active Home Office policy.

The Tory Government is hell bent on ruthlessly pursuing a political agenda with scant regard for the welfare of those affected. It also paints a worrying picture of their attitude toward the role of Parliament when they are caught out. It’s high time that the Home Secretary resigned, but I fear this will do little to change things. Only a Labour Government will do that.
