Monday’s news about the liquidation of Carillion was a shockingdevelopment for their staff and their sub-contractors. The Tory Government used Carillion on major projects all over the country such as the HS2 rail line and employed them to carry out numerous public services. The Tories did thisdespite repeated warnings about their finances and debts of £900million.

The jobs of their 20,000 staff must be protected and any projects currently under construction must be completed. In Liverpool Carillion were building the new Royal Hospital. The local NHS Trust already had plans in place in the event thatCarillion collapsed and will take steps to ensure building work continues while incurring no extra costs.

The current situation, as I have been made aware, is that sub-contractors have been informed that they will be paid for their work from the 15th January until the end of their contracts. However, discussions are still ongoing with regard to payment for work carried out prior to January 15th. I have been informed that this complex situation may take some time to fix.

Government contracts should be handled by properly funded local councils and where necessary a range of different size construction companies should be contractedto promote fair competition. The Tories have been reckless in awarding so many major projects to one company, their ideological reliance on big business is irresponsible and here it has proven to be a total failure.
