On Friday I tried to secure a second reading for my 10 Minute Rule Bill to ban dangerous old tyres being used on public service vehicles. Sadly, as expected, a Tory Whip objected to the Bill indicating that they do not support for this change in the law.

It is clear from a question I asked the Transport Minister on Thursday that the Govt are using the excuse that they need more research to enable them to resist changing the law. However, they’ve said this before and then simply failed to commission the research, so I think this is an excuse for inaction. I think the evidence is clear, old tyres are dangerous, old tyres can kill, we need to ban them from our roads as soon as possible to save lives.

Despite the objection my Bill will have the opportunity to be heard again on 19th of January. It is my hope that between now and then we can convince the Government to support the Bill. There is no good reason for the Tories to oppose banning old tyres, but I will work hard to provide additional proof of the dangers old, worn out tyres pose to the public.

Friday was a disappointing turn of events for my constituent Frances Molloy and her team at the Tyred Campaign who have been working non-stop for this ban. However, I know that Frances will get the law on tyres changed. The campaign is gathering more support than ever the campaign now has the backing of Councillors, MPs, MEPs and businesses from all over Merseyside and from around the UK.

The Tories won’t be able to stop this simple change in the law from being made. It’s time for the Government to see sense, old tyres kill, a change in the law won’t cost the public purse, and it will save lives.
