On Tuesday, I was proud to be part of a major first step in theTyred Campaign’s fight to ban dangerous old tyres being used on public service vehicles by introducing a 10 Minute Rule Bill to the House of Commons that, if passed, would make this vital change in the law a reality. My constituent Frances Molloy and her team at theTyred Campaign have been working non-stop for this ban, and I was pleased to see the Bill move, unopposed, for a second reading on the 1st December. I will continue to work with my Labour party colleagues and others to get this bill passed.

In Merseyside, Councils and businesses from across the region have already signed up to removing tyres older than 10 years from their vehicles. Their support for the Tyred campaign is clear. Now it’s time for the Government to follow Merseyside’s lead and take the lifesaving step of banning old tyres.

This simple change in the law is common sense, it won’t cost the public purse, and it will save lives. It’s time for the Government to recognise thatold tyres killand close this gap in our law.
