On Friday I joined Frances Molloy at a Tyred Campaign event for a tour on a City Sights bus. The tour company has recently announced that it is signing up to the campaign and will not use tyres older than 10 years on any of its vehicles. The level of support that the Tyred campaign is receiving in Merseyside is amazing anda testament to the hard work that Frances and her team are doing.

On Monday Frances is meeting with Transport Minister Jesse Norman to discuss putting a 10 year age limiton all tyres used on our roads. While this is a great step forward I am concerned that the government will not act to solve this problem despite how easy it would be to change the law and save lives.

If Frances’ meeting with Mr Norman does not provide the change in the law needed I will hopefully be able to introduce legislationmyself on the 31st October when I will be calling for a ban on fitting tyres over the age of 10 years on buses and coaches. This simple legislation won’t cost the Government anything to implement, and will save lives. It’s frankly unbelievable that buses and coaches are allowed to carry passengers without any legal age limit on the tyres that they use.
