On Monday I spoke on an urgent question about the Ellesmere Port Vauxhall Factory where 400 workers are facing redundancy. I asked the Minister of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy why the Government insists on talking about a no deal Brexit despite the uncertainty this creates for businesses in the UK. In answer the Minister repeated the same empty lines we have all heard over and over, that her government is seeking a deal that “works for businesses in theUK”.

Vauxhall have insisted jobs losses are not linked to leaving the EU and are because of rising costs and reduced orders. However they also said the plant would receive no new investment until after Brexit negotiations are finished. It is clear that Britain’s uncertain future relationship with the EU is making businesses think twice before investing and slowing the growth of our economy.

The Tory’s inability to set out a plan for the UK’s future and lack of progress in negotiations is forcing businesses to hold off on investment and putting thousands of jobs at risk. This is especially concerning for a constituency like mine where car plants give thousands of people well paid, secure jobs.
