It was a pleasure to meet with the children of Saint Paschal Baylon Primary School this week to collect a petition they’ve started calling on the Government to allow more unaccompanied child refugees into the UK. The pupils from year 5 and 6 wrote to me to tell me all about their campaign and the difference they hope to make with my support. They have already collected 507 signatures on their petition from the school community and we’re looking to increase it at the school summer fair, where they asked parents to sign as well.

There are many vulnerable child refugees in dire need who find themselves separated from their families and in distress. The Government had promised to allow 3000 unaccompanied children into Britain from France, Greece and Italy but so far have allowed only 350 to come here. Labour is pressing in Parliament for the original commitment to be fulfilled.

It is incredibly impressive to see young people engaging with such important issues and taking an active and vocal role in society, and I am proud to have this school in my constituency.

It was great to be able to meet so many of thepupils, parents and teachers when I visited on Friday. I will make sure the Minister receives their petition, and do everything I can to support this important campaign.
