I was pleased to help the Can Cook Kitchen launch the latest phase of their campaign to eradicate food poverty in Liverpool and to give people who through no fault of their own have no food and no money to buy it the chance to eat nutritious, fresh food.

Along with Ali Machray the editor of the Liverpool Echo, Andy Cook, the Chief Constable of Merseyside Police and restaurateurs and food business owners, we discussed raising enough money to prevent any child in Liverpool going hungry over the school holidays when there are no school meals to keep them fed.

It is a disgrace that food hunger is increasing in South Liverpool and Halewood due to benefit cuts and sanctions, delays in people receiving their benefit entitlement, zero hours contracts,low pay for those inwork and the increasing debt that such income insecurity can cause at a time when prices are increasing. Can Cook’s efforts are ambitious and unfortunately, needed more than ever and I am glad to be able to help support them in any way that I can.
